Final Major Project- Evaluation

In this final project I decided to follow on from the previous project and look at the way child grow; physically and cognitively. I felt that I wanted to study this because of my sudden interest in the way child think. I recently started to baby sit and observing the baby was interesting to me and made me think about exploring it in more detail. Throughout the project I had some struggles and some really high points and the research probably was the reason for those highs.

During the beginning of the project I started with the research, I thought that this part was fun because I had to work with children to get an idea of their interests and the kind of things that they like to draw. Fortunately I have a lot of young cousins and they agreed to do some painting for as a visual beginning to my project. It messy to say the least but also educational; next was the less interesting research- reading and gathering information. In other projects that would have been true but the research into children’s thinking and the way they grow seemed to push me into doing more and more research; I think I read and gathered information for 6 or more hours one evening.
The crits that I had with my tutor were also very positive; she’d always make sure I was on the right track with what week it was and what I needed to do for weeks to come. The feedback one research and the beginnings of my experimentation were good to hear because she thought I had an interesting concept and I was going about things in the right way. I had feedback from peers and family; the comments were helpful and overall made me want to do more.

As it was my last project I wanted to make sure that my time keeping wasn’t an issue, in which case I made sure I planned almost everything. For the first couple of weeks it was difficult but once the research started I was on track and my ideas started to appear. With the action plan I knew that I had to start experimenting soon and building up my sketchbook. I learned how to lino print in the previous project and I wanted to carry on with that in this one; so I began experimenting with colours, backgrounds and sizes. This technique was something I had done before in my sixth form, so I was familiar with how to do it, but because I was doing a portrait, I then knew it had to accurate and show off my skills.
Fortunately these were very successful experiments, they all worked really well and I was then able to start putting them together in order to think about what my final piece was going to look like and how I was going to exhibit it.

No project goes without its problems and I did have plenty of them; starting with the way I presented my work in my sketchbook at the beginning. I feel that all that text could have been presented in a more visual way, but at the time I just wanted to get it in the sketchbook and annotated to show my understanding. But now I feel that it looks a little boring. Although I said that my timing was a little better during this project; there were still a few issue, for example towards the end of the project I had calculated how long it was actually time me to print on 10 metres of paper, as well as illustrate over the top; so I found myself having to work through the night to get things ready.
By the time I had realised I didn’t have long left and I still had lots to do; filling in gaps in the sketchbook and printing out things for my final piece, for example. I then found that there was a huge problem, my printer didn’t work, which slowed down everything and these print outs were essential to my final piece. So after pleading with the printer it finally worked, which then overcome all the issues I had. I didn’t need anymore problems because I didn’t have the time, but during the last few prints of the final piece I ran out of materials; luckily when it comes to the exhibition the rest of the paper won’t be seen, so that wasn’t too much of a problem.

When the time come to start thinking about my exhibition I wasn’t sure how was going to present the wallpaper, but I didn’t know I didn’t want it to be flat against the wall. This made me think of using a room divider which I was cover with the wallpaper, so that it looks fashionable and stands out in the exhibition. However, it was going to be hugely expensive to buy after exploring a few options and I didn’t think that I would have been able to carry 4 doors into the university.
I came across my new exhibition idea during my walk around of the 3rd floor at the university, here they were exhibiting wallpaper and the way it was hung inspired me. Putting up my work this way wouldn’t cost me much and didn’t require any heavy lifting and would hopefully still make a good impact at the exhibition.

In my proposal I stated in my conclusion that I wanted to write a blog (http://joh09287916.blogspot.co.uk/ ) to show further understanding of the project and show a little more visualisation, something that it difficult to do in a thought journal. The blog was supposed to be for gallery visits, Youtube clips etc. and I presented it in a similar way to the way in which my thought journal is presented- quite rough   looking. This was purposely done, to highlight my quick thinking and the sort of things I find interesting that can’t be expressed whilst on the tube. However, writing the blog didn’t become something that was left for long periods of time before I posted something new, because of the other elements of the project. But this didn’t hinder any thoughts that went on whilst on the tube or walking round art galleries; I always carried my thought journal, I wrote in it almost everyday I even had it in bed with me. This was good because an important thought came to me whilst asleep at 2:30am.

Lastly, gallery visits were something that I needed to do at the beginning of the project because this is when you can gather as much information as you can in order to get you thinking about as many things when it comes to the research. An example of this was when I went to the Museum of Childhood, I found it educational and going there allowed me to have lots to look at in terms of what child liked to play with a long time ago, in comparison to what children play with now a days. Something that really inspired me in this gallery was the letters that were written by children from a long time ago, letters to do with things they like, letters to the parents and father Christmas, they all gave me something to think about when it came to researching the way children learn and think.

In conclusion, I think that overall this project was a huge success and I achieved a lot throughout. Managing my time was crucial and I think that because I managed it better, the work that was produced was also better. There is room or improvement in my sketchbook for example, presentation and going to more workshops, intern further expanding my experimentation. However, once I had decided what I was going to do I thought that learning new techniques would hinder the time I had to complete work. Sticking with a skill that I knew a lot about was the right thing to do in terms of making good time with sketchbook work and final piece planning. Finally, I think that my blog should have been paid a little more attention and perhaps presented in a more professional manner.

Final piece ideas

From the beginning I knew I wanted to do lino printing but I didn't know how I was going to present it. So I researched different ways I could display them.
I'm thinking wallpaper, covering a long bit of paper with my lino prints.

Screen research

I'm thinking about my final piece, and the way its going to look at exhibition. For starters I don't want the wallpaper to just be on the wall, I want it to look a little more fashionable- something that someone would like to have in their house. So I'm looking at room dividers, something that was used a long time ago for screening yourself when getting changed. But I'm thinking that it might be a nice place to hang wallpaper.

So I'm looked at this Youtube clip that inspired me to make my own because buying one costs too much:

Lino Prints and process

I know I want to do a lino print now, for my final piece but I don't want to use people that I don't know from the internet, so I wanted to make it more personal, I want to do a portrait of my cousin, seen as though they have been the main highlight in my project.

Process of lino printing:

1. Lino cut of my cousin- Sadie- aged  4
2/3
2. Roll paint with a roller onto the lino cut

Portraits

Thought this week I have been thinking about doing a timeline piece, whereby I would have lino prints in the form of a portrait; to show the stages of life, from baby> an OAP.
I have done some drawings and line drawings of these and they are an idea that I'm going to bare in mind. I do think that the "stage" idea is something I'm going to think about in later research.

Crit Day 1

My tutor wanted to do a quick, informal crit of the work we had done so far. All I had to show for my work was initial ideas, drawings from my cousins and lots of written research. However, this is only about the start of the 3rd week, so I was on track. But I know I have to start thinking about my final piece and what my exhibition was going to look like.

I did however, like this crit because it gave my peers a chance to see my work and tell me what they think of my project and what I could look at in terms of artists, websites etc.
Everyone seemed to understand what my project was about but people wanted to see more presentation in my sketchbook, more working things out and apply some graphics to help with understanding.

Children's TV programs:

These children's programs are not only entertaining but they teach children a lot, for example: other languages, sign language, how to eat healthily and how use art to make something useful.

Inspiration!

Just a quick picture that I found of the mess my cousins made, I thought it looked really artistic.

Research

Research into the physical and cognitive development in babies, toddlers, pre-school children etc. I find this process very interesting, I enjoyed reading articles and depicting the right information. It is a very long part of the project, I spent up to 6 hours a day reading, printing, annotating. But it is important that I understand every part of my own project:

Artist research within sketchbook

Double page on a a few artists that inspired me:

Miki De Goodaboom
&
George Hunter -
I thought that these would work within my sketchbook because they show a lot of child-like qualities and I thought that that would relate to the work that my cousins did for me.

Research (Bibliography)

Tina Bruce was the first one I had a quick look at, I didn't manage to find anything that I could really use in my sketchbook or my work in general. But it was interesting:

Christopher Spence, this book really only helped with my understanding of the way in which children change in their environments as they grow up from babies > children > teens.

Initial Research

My first thought was to go to the Museum of Childhood and gather sketches, images, and anything else that inspired me. I was mainly looking for children's drawings and letters that were written by them. Whilst I was there I did come across lots of old letters that were written a long time ago and it really inspired me because of the way the were written and what they wrote about.

The Beginning

Before the this project really got started I had to think about a concept and I already knew I wanted to do a project involving children and development. So I got my little cousins to work, I gave them some paper each and as many materials as they wanted and set them lose. It was very messy, but also very educational, I learned that the really small ones (ages around 2-4) simply covered the paper in paint, whereas an older child of maybe 7/8 only  covered the paper in things they liked.

Also, I found that the younger ones didn't want to stop because it was probably something they hadn't done before and because it was messy. But the older ones did two drawings and then got a better offer (sweets mainly). When I asked to clean up only the smaller ones wanted to help the others "didn't want to get messy again" (Said the 7 year old).

I managed to get a bunch of work from them and I really enjoyed the experience:

Final Major Project

For this project I think I may carry on from the last one; which was to do with my target audience of children. This was a decision my tutor and I discussed when UCAS came around, because I've decided not to go to university this year I wanted the last project to target my career choice for the next year. I'm thinking about teaching at my old school, in order to get more experience. In this next project I will look at child development and the ways in which children grow: physically and mentally.

I will need to think about an action plan, so that I can get start efficiently and know what I'm doing at each stage of the project.
